Bernard A. Macknis of Newark, DE passed away on 29 November 2016 at Heartland Hospice Care after a courageous battle with Pancreatic cancer. He remained surrounded by his immediate family: Loving wife of 53 years, Judith Sanders Macknis; three sons: Gregory, Scott, and Mark with Wife/Daughter in-law Kimberly (Williams) and loving grand-daughters: Madilyn and Sydney. Pre-deceased by Father/Mother, Albert & Helen Macknis and sister, Bernice (Woratyla). Survived by sisters, Jean Fabian (Jack) and Helen George (Kenneth).
Bernard (Bernie) was a graduate of Minersville(PA) HS and the US Naval Academy-Annapolis, Class of 1961. Graduate studies at Syracuse University. An extensive employment history: US Naval officer, Allied Chemical-Solvay (NY), Joseph A. Schlitz Brewing Co.-Baldwinsville (NY), ICI-Stewart Pharmaceuticals-Newark (DE), TEI Services-Royersford (PA) and Bemark Associates-Newark (DE). An active Newark HS football booster in the 1980’s who led the drive to install lighting on Hoffman Field to reinstitute Friday Night Games.
Visitation: Sunday, December 4 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, December 5 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s of the Assumption, 7200 Lancaster Ave., Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment: Wednesday, December 7 at 11:00 AM at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
