Edmond Johnson Obituary

Edmond D. "Ted" Johnson, age 82, passed away April 11, 2024, at his home in Wilmington, DE, following a two-month battle with an extremely rare, aggressive cancer.

Ted would be proudest to be remembered as a lifelong lover of education. He was a graduate of St. Paul's Academy, Concord, NH, class of 1959; Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, with degrees in math and chemistry, class of 1963; and the University of Florida Law School, Gainesville, FL, class of 1983, where he graduated first in his class.

Ted's professional careers were many and varied, but he found his true work passion during his 33 years in the world of corporate litigation in Delaware. Beginning in 1983 after graduating from law school, he joined the law firm of Morris Nichols Arsht & Tunnell, followed by The Bayard Firm, and concluded his legal career at Pepper Hamilton, retiring at the end of 2015. Ted worked long hours, but he thrived on the mental challenges of being a litigator. If you were lucky enough to have him in your corner, no one would fight harder for you.

His hobbies often involved his need to push his limits, both mentally and physically, but his competitive nature was never about beating the other guy. It was always about his quest to improve upon his last personal best. Whether it be on a black-diamond ski slope, on a racetrack in one of his beloved race cars, or atop a super sport motorcycle, Ted was happiest when he was living on the edge. He also enjoyed sharing with his family and friends his love of flying, sailing, motorboating, scuba diving, and traveling in the RV. Ted was a self-taught computer programmer, photographer, and home

brewer. His deep love of France, with Paris and the Loire Valley in particular, led to many of his most memorable vacations. Whatever interest a family member had, Ted was a full supporter and would educate himself to further their hobbies in any way he could.

Ted will be remembered as a man who lived with honor, integrity, and intensity. One of his favorite quotes was, "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain an idea without accepting it." –Aristotle

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Ann Sager Johnson; sons, lain Johnson, Ronan Johnson, and Niall Johnson; brother, Lorne Johnson; sister-in-law, Patricia Figueroa (Tony); nephews, Timothy Figueroa (Adrienne), Christopher Figueroa (Jessica), and Wade Johnson; and nieces, Kate Atkinson (Stephen) and Bennie Bright (Adam). Ted was preceded in death by his parents, William and Natalie Johnson, and a brother, Rollin Johnson (Penelope).

According to Ted's wishes, no funeral will be held. A memorial gathering will be planned for a later date.
