Robert Leonzio Obituary

Robert J. Leonzio, 72, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Wilmington, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 19, 2018.

Bob was born in Wilmington on June 8, 1945, son of the late Ebbo “Al” and Josephine (DiCarlo) Leonzio.  A veteran of the United States Navy, he proudly served aboard the USS Essex, transferred to the Navy Reserves and completed his military service in 1969.  Bob earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Delaware and was employed in Research and Development with the DuPont Company for 30 years.  Following his career with DuPont, he was employed as an OSHA manager with the University of Pennsylvania for 10 years.

Deacon Bob was ordained to the permanent diaconate for the Diocese of Wilmington in 2001.  He enjoyed his ministry at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Wilmington and St. Edmond Parish in Rehoboth. Through the years, Deacon Bob was honored to baptize many children, officiate at wedding and funeral services, and proclaim the Gospel during Mass.  He especially enjoyed his many years as a volunteer manager at the Café di Famigilia for the annual St. Anthony’s Italian Festival.

Bob always had a big smile, and possessed an infectious laugh that could be heard before he was seen.  He had a fine eye and a talent for art, enjoyed cooking, gardening and time with his family and friends.  Bob loved the beach and was happy to make Rehoboth his home.

Bob will be dearly missed by his daughters, Alyssa Leonzio Sparklin (Jason) and Jennie Leonzio; and his beloved grandchildren, Reid Ziomek, Connor Delaney, Dylan Delaney.  He is also survived by his sister, Frances Franzone (Thomas); his brother, Albert Leonzio; his nieces, nephews and their families; his aunt, Helen Johnston.  Bob also leaves his faithful dog, Petey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and DuPont Streets, Wilmington on Saturday, February 24 at 10:00AM.  Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

The viewing will be held privately for Bob’s immediate family.
