Idalberto "Doc" Caballero Deler

Idalberto Caballero Deler, MD, affectionately referred to as “Doc” passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the age of 92.

Doc was born in Santiago de Cuba on September 12, 1925, son of the late Francisco Caballero Rodriguez and Cristina Deler Ruiz and came to the United States in 1965. He was a pediatrician in Cuba. Doc was employed with the State of Delaware, retiring from the Gov. Bacon Health Center, and maintained a part time practice in Delaware City. Doc was a past member of the American Medical Association, the Cuban Medical Association, the Medical Society of Delaware, as well as a past member of the Delaware City Lions Club.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, watching sports, particularly baseball and basketball. Doc also enjoyed traveling, having taken many trips with his Lions Club friends, and took great pleasure in taking special trips to Miami with his daughter and her family, as well as his companion. Doc was a great story and joke teller, and was devoted to his beloved family and friends.

Doc will be dearly missed by his daughters, Daisy C. Deler, Marilyn Gilmore and husband, John and their daughter, Kyra; his companion of 42 years, Martha K. Austin, her children, Leigh A. Weber, husband, Gene, their children, Matthew, Brian, Alexis; Richele Lawson, partner, Ryan, her son, Jeffrey; Paul W. Austin, wife, Barb, their sons, Jacob and Nicholas. He is also survived by his two brothers and one sister.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Saturday, November 18 from 9:00-10:15AM. Funeral services will begin at 10:15AM, followed by interment in All Saints Cemetery.
